A serious concern: working as a lawyer has never been so dangerous
Almost every day, lawyers are killed, reported missing, tortured, arrested, threatened and followed, because of the work they do. China, Iran, Honduras, the Philippines, Columbia, Mexico, Pakistan and Turkey are currently amongst the most dangerous countries for lawyers. NGOs and international organisations have come to the conclusion that the global health crisis has brought about an increase in breaches of rights and freedoms all over the world. Acts of violence are on the rise and being a lawyer has never been so dangerous.
Faced with this alarming situation, the Paris Bar has stepped up its commitment to protecting lawyers worldwide. It is taking concrete action, such as sending observer missions to the trials of colleagues abroad, setting up human rights training courses for lawyers in high-risk areas, and intervening with international bodies to denounce violations of lawyers' rights.
In addition, the Paris Bar works with non-governmental organizations to provide legal and financial support to threatened lawyers, and to raise public awareness of the crucial importance of defending lawyers. These initiatives aim to ensure that lawyers can practice their profession without fear of repression, underlining the Paris Bar's commitment to justice and the defense of human rights on a global scale.
